Can I Replace Vegetables with Your Products?
You can occasionally replace vegetables with any of our products on days when fresh vegetables aren’t available. How often and how much depends on your personal feeding philosophy, as there are many approaches—but we’re happy to share ours.
Remember, you do not need a lot of Gussy’s Gut® per meal, so there is not a lot of vegetable fiber just from our product being added to your dog’s bowl. It may be enough; if it is not, you can add additional vegetables to your dog’s meals.
Our Feeding Philosophy
Dr. Ian Billinghurst, our chief advisor, is recognized as the father of raw feeding and the founder of the “BARF” diet (biologically appropriate raw food) for dogs and cats. He recommends a food pyramid (see below) approach that includes vegetables—blended or pureed—for added nutrients and fiber.
Most of our products are highly nutrient-dense, but your dog may still not get enough fiber from them alone, especially at the typical serving sizes we recommend.
Can You Feed More Instead of Veggies?
You can safely increase serving sizes of our products if needed (for example, adjusting per your dog’s weight), and on those days, you may not need vegetables. However, we still encourage incorporating fresh vegetables most days whenever possible.
Why We Still Recommend Vegetables
We suggest adding high-nutrient, colorful vegetables (red, purple, yellow, etc.), especially those not already included in our products, to provide fiber and diverse nutrients. Dr. B also recommends varying your dog’s ratios of vegetables, proteins, and feeding times. “Biologically appropriate” feeding isn’t exact and can differ from day to day.
