Understanding AAFCO Nutrient Analysis and Gussy’s Gut® for Dogs

“Achieving the AAFCO definition of complete and balanced meals is not why we created Gussy's Gut® for dogs. Ours offers more than just macronutrients—it provides valuable whole-food phytonutrients and micronutrients.”

Why Gussy’s Gut® Isn’t About AAFCO

Sorry, we do not advise or consult on the AAFCO definition of complete and balanced meals. Achieving this definition is not why we created Gussy's Gut® for dogs. Ours offers more than just macronutrients recommended by AAFCO. It provides very valuable and beneficial whole-food phytonutrients and micronutrients. You can use Gussy's Gut® products in addition to an AAFCO diet if you wish. That is highly recommended, actually.

The Heart of Keeping Dogs Healthy

This is a very important question, and the answer is at the heart of what keeping our dogs (and cats) healthy is all about. To ensure Gussy’s Gut® is the nutritional powerhouse it has to be, we make it in small batches of whole raw foods, always fresh and from a revolving assortment of specially chosen farms.

Providing an analysis for every batch would be cost-prohibitive. Even if we could, it would be different for each batch and would not be available until four weeks after each batch is made.

“Counting every nutrient (and only those few we actually know about) in a Raw Whole Food makes no sense from a biological viewpoint.” – Dr. Billinghurst.

We do not do this for ourselves, and equally, such a practice makes no sense for the animals that share our lives. The bottom line to feeding actual food is to feed it and watch the brilliant results unfold.

Why Nutritional Analysis Isn’t Necessary

Dr. Billinghurst says that attempting to adjust what you feed based on an analysis of the (known) nutrients in Gussy’s Gut® is most definitely not worth your time and will bring no further benefit to your dog.

“While nutritional analysis is very achievable with synthetic nutrients and supplements, it is not necessary with real foods.”

Look at our product just like you would vegetables and not like most “supplements” made from synthetic nutrients.

Sources and Guidance

I hope that draws you a little closer to understanding the biologically appropriate view of the role played by real food "supplementation" and of balanced diets.

May I suggest a few sources for you to consult? I just looked up:

I hope this pyramid from Dr. Billinghurst helps you! These are the general ratios of food he recommends. Notice there are no measurements. There are approximate ratios.
